Your Day-to-Day:

The Mechanical Maintenance Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a biomass power generation facility. You will perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on mechanical equipment, with emphasis on biomass systems such as fuel conveyors, wood-fired boilers, ash handling systems, and steam turbines. The technician uses a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to manage work orders, track trends, and support data-driven planning. They help ensure system reliability during normal operations and outages, often working with operations staff and contractors to meet safety and quality standards.

Madison Biomass Facility also produces 55 net megawatts of renewable energy by transforming responsibly harvested wood biomass into electricity. Designed to meet both environmental and operational needs, the plant features advanced emissions control technologies—including a Foster Wheeler boiler, hot precipitator, and SCR system. Madison contributes to cleaner air, reliable energy, and the long-term sustainability of Georgia's energy infrastructure by delivering low-carbon power to the community.

Your scope of responsibility as Mechanical Maintenance Technician includes the following primary responsibilities:

  • Participate in the plant's preventive, routine, and predictive maintenance programs by completing scheduled work, using CMMS tools, and gathering operational data to improve mechanical system reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues affecting biomass-specific systems, including fuel feed conveyors, vibrating grates, and ash removal equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, and overhaul a range of plant mechanical equipment, including pumps, valves, fans, gearboxes, air compressors, and steam turbines.
  • Support boiler outages and maintenance periods by inspecting high-temperature pressure parts, soot blowers, expansion joints, and associated piping for wear, fouling, and thermal fatigue.
  • Collaborate with operators and other maintenance personnel to ensure coordinated plant operation, equipment availability, and safety performance.
  • Help update and improve maintenance procedures to reflect actual conditions and manufacturer recommendations, especially for biomass combustion equipment.
  • Coordinate mechanical work during scheduled outages, minimizing downtime while ensuring understanding of scope, schedule, and safety goals.
  • Operate and maintain shop equipment such as lathes, drill presses, and balancing tools to fabricate or refurbish components.
  • Install and modify piping, brackets, support, and mechanical components associated with biomass fuel delivery systems and steam cycle equipment.
  • Monitor and interpret readings from gauges, transmitters, and process indicators related to pressure, temperature, vibration, fluid flow, and steam generation.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory for biomass plant components and ensure maintenance records, drawings, and technical documentation are accurate and accessible.
  • Oversee and guide contractors during mechanical repairs, equipment replacements, and upgrades, ensuring adherence to plant safety practices and technical requirements.
  • Complete additional responsibilities as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Plant Manager, contributing to the plant's overall performance and regulatory compliance.

Who You Are:

  • High school education, providing a solid foundation in procedures and instructions. An associate degree in Power Plant Technology or a related technical field, with a focus on mechanical or maintenance training, is advantageous.
  • Hands-on experience in maintenance at a biomass or similar power-generating facility as a plant mechanic, millwright, or equivalent experienced trade role.
  • In-depth understanding of biomass plant operations and fuel handling systems, with demonstrated ability to perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on mechanical and balance-of-plant equipment including conveyors, feeders, fans, pumps, valves, air compressors, ash handling systems, and steam turbines.
  • Commitment to safety practices and environmental regulations, ensuring compliance during all phases of maintenance and repairs, including management of contractors to maintain safety and quality standards.
  • 1+ years of experience assembling mechanical and rotating equipment, with proficiency using precision measuring tools, welding equipment, machining tools, diagnostic instruments, and rigging gear.
  • Familiarity with biomass-specific maintenance challenges, such as fouling, corrosion, and material buildup, and ability to respond quickly to mechanical issues affecting fuel flow or steam generation.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting instrumentation and process indicators such as temperature, pressure, vibration, fluid flow, and emissions data, with the ability to assess and respond to abnormal conditions.
  • Competent in documenting maintenance activities, contributing to a comprehensive historical record and supporting continuous improvement programs.
  • Work with teams during outages and daily maintenance activities.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver's license and ensure it always remains in good standing.
