Chemical Lab Technician

Opportunity Overview:  Chemical Lab Technician – Columbia, SC - 12 Month+ Contract/Contract to Hire Position

WECTEC Staffing/Westinghouse is looking for a Chemical Lab Technician for work onsite at our Columbia, SC site.  This is a contract role with the potential to convert to a permanent position with Westinghouse.  The Technician will perform a variety of laboratory assignments including non-routine assignments of a complex nature, communicate as required, and follow priorities to assure prompt release of results. 

What your day-to-day looks like:  

• Set up and operate equipment in the Analytical Services Laboratory. 
• Perform minor repairs on instruments and associated equipment.  Make sure that preventive maintenance programs are followed.  Assist vendor engineers or plant maintenance personnel in making major repairs. 
• Assist chemists with the installation and qualification of new equipment. 
• Perform detail setups on complex analytical equipment. 
• Must have thorough knowledge of instruments operated. 
• Assist chemists in the evaluation of new procedures. 
• Recommend new or improved procedures and techniques and assist in developing them.  Recommend better use of existing equipment. 
• Prepare and standardize solutions routinely used in analytical procedures. 
• Prepare and verify control standards to be used in analytical procedures. 
• Collect acceptable analytical chemistry data, prepare for necessary approvals, and identify for distribution. 
• Determine uranium content of UF6 gas. 
• Train lower classified laboratory personnel in techniques and responsibilities.
• Assist management in uranium accountability and capital equipment inventories. 
• Assist and instruct lower classified analytical laboratory technicians in use of instruments, procedures and analytical techniques. 

Scope, purpose and frequency of contacts/communication

• Provide communication for continuity of operations from shift to shift. 
• Frequent contact with operating personnel in other departments to obtain and provide information. 
• Frequent contact with laboratory chemists and other department engineers pertaining to special projects. 
• Occasional contact with customer auditors and regulatory auditors. 

• The Technician will receive approved written laboratory procedures, plant policy and procedure manuals. Additionally, they will receive written and/or oral instructions from laboratory management and professionals giving broad outlines on new assignments. 

What we need to see from you:

• An associate degree in Biology or Chemistry OR two years of post-high school technical training in chemistry or equivalent related experience.
• Ability to work under a minimum of direct supervision and take initiative based on established priorities. 
• Strong, effective communication skills
• US Citizenship is required 
• Ability to work onsite at the Columbia Fuels Fabrication Facility in Columbia, SC
