About the role:

Edina, MN

You will support the Solar Design Team, focusing on distribution system design and upgrades required to interconnect distributed solar (DER) projects to the electric grid. You will work with engineers and the DER group to evaluate existing distribution infrastructure, perform field site checks at residential and commercial locations, and develop design solutions that ensure safe and reliable solar connections.

The scope includes designing distribution upgrades such as transformer changes, pole‑to‑pole upgrades, pole‑to‑house connections, and other system modifications needed to support solar installations. You will research mapping data, assess field conditions, develop upgrade plans using GIS, and provide design documentation and cost estimates back to the engineering group for approval and execution.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review solar interconnection requests and distribution system impacts
  • Conduct site checks at homes and businesses to verify existing infrastructure and field conditions
  • Research utility maps, records, and system data to understand required upgrades
  • Develop distribution design solutions for solar connections, including:
    • Transformer upgrades
    • Pole‑to‑pole and pole‑to‑house upgrades
    • Other required distribution modifications
  • Create and update designs using GIS
  • Prepare cost estimates and design recommendations for the engineering team
  • Manage several design and construction projects simultaneously
  • Communicate directly with customers in the field and team members in the office
