About the role: The Coal Handler position is located onsite at our client's facility in Madison, IN. This is a contract role that is full-time and long-term.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform cleaning work on the coal conveyor system, such as car dumpers, bunkers, runways, tripper room, belt decks, stacker-reclaimer and tunnels.
- Load, unload, and handle coal, materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Couple and uncouple railroad cars. Set and release brakes, operate rail switches. Signal the locomotive operator when to start, stop, go forward, or backward. Flag traffic at crossings.
- Haul and move materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Clean work of all kinds in, around, and on equipment, buildings, and yard. Clean and remove ashes and debris.
- Cut grass and weeds. Dig ditches.
- Work on tracks and track beds.
- Replace light bulbs and perform similar unskilled manual tasks.
- Operate and perform maintenance on all coal yard related equipment.
- Clean and perform lubrication on all equipment including conveyors, pumps, large motors and gearboxes and rolling stock.
- Secure, identify and transport coal samples,.
- Inspect and test fire equipment. and document tests.
- Operate automotive equipment.
- Maintain equipment, tools and work areas in a clean condition.
- Perform tasks following client's safety rules, operating regulations and practices and report unsafe conditions and practices.
- Report irregularities and abnormal conditions to the appropriate management.
- Clear and tag equipment in coal yard area.
- Help train other employees.
- Assist employees.
- Operate equipment for cleaning purposes.
- Perform similar or less experienced work.
Qualifications:
- High school degree or equivalent education and experience.
- Can understand practices.
- Learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work.
- Must have the physical capabilities to climb and work on or about plant equipment at different elevations.
- Can respond to callouts to support business operational needs and schedules.
- Must have mechanical skills. These skills must allow working on several equipment, such as large motors and gearboxes, conveyors, pumps, hydraulic systems, and electrical controls. This includes troubleshooting and maintenance of electrical controls, calibration and maintenance of weighing instrumentation, and chute plugged switches. Additionally, the job requires welding, cutting, and fabrication skills, among others.
- Can safely lift and handle materials and equipment weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Be able to pass criminal background and drug/alcohol screen (including medical and recreational marijuana and CBD oil)

We are committed to transparency and equity in all our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $28/hour to $29/hour.
