Principal EHS Engineer


Westinghouse Electric Company, Nuclear Fuel, Specialty Metals Plant in Blairsville, PA has an opening for an experienced Environmental, Health, and Safety Engineer. We produce zirconium metal tubing for national and international markets.

The position’s primary responsibility will be to perform environmental compliance activities and supporting the environmental management system.

Secondary responsibilities will include assuring compliance with OSHA and other requirements and improve worker safety by use of an EHS Management System built on the ISO 14001 and OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) models.


Your Day to Day:

  • Maintain and improve facility safety and environmental procedures to ensure they are usable by plant employees and reflect industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) and Westinghouse’s strong Nuclear Safety Culture.
  • Direct oversight of facility environmental programs, reporting, and waste management.  This includes ISO 14001 Management System, NPDES Permit Requirements/Reporting, DEP/PADEP Waste Management/Handling/Reporting Requirements, etc.
  • Perform various environmental inspections and maintain site sustainability data.
  • Conduct injury and illness investigations and provide plant management with recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Lead EHS self-assessments to measure performance to safety expectations. Provide plant management with reports and recommendations.
  • Perform OSHA required recordkeeping duties and maintain injury and illness records for internal company reports. Perform data analysis and trending.
  • Identify workplace safety hazards through use of Job Safety Analyses and other tools and develop approaches to reduce safety risks.
  • Participate in hazard assessments and project design reviews.
  • Develop and deliver Environmental, Health and Safety related training.
  • Ability to be organized, effectively manage time, make data-based decisions, work independently, and communicate with plant management, EH&S staff, area management, and employees.


Requirements to be successful in the role:


  • Bachelor's Degree in any environmental engineering discipline or safety/environmental science.   
  • 5-10 years industrial EHS experience is required.  
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation is preferred. 
  • Experience working in a union environment is preferred.



Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrate knowledge in Environmental Regulations and Reporting Requirements, Safety Management Systems, Risk Management processes, Audit/Assessment Processes, Training processes, Accident prevention. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge and have work experience in Property Loss Prevention, Fire and Life Safety, Emergency Response and Preparedness, Process Safety Management, Building Codes, Worker's Compensation, Accident and Injury prevention principles and techniques, Office and Industrial Ergonomics, and behavior based safety principles and programs.
  • Excellent presentation, project management, priority management, communication and writing skills are required.
  • Ability to influence and effectively partner with others is required.
