Your Day to Day:
- This position is the quality engineer responsible for the Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility’s Metallurgical Laboratory
- Develop, recommend, and technical solutions for material testing in accordance with customer requirements, applicable standards, and regulations.
- Direct assessments of operations and identify opportunities for performance improvement through internal quality assessments, environmental/health & safety reviews, total quality reviews, etc.
- Recommend and influence operations to take appropriate corrective actions, successfully resolve significant quality issues and implement performance improvement.
- Develop, review and approve reports summarizing results and recommendations from testing operations.
- Problem solve technical and material issues relating to new product introduction, new supplier qualification and existing process improvement and troubleshooting.
- Lead, co-ordinate and integrate complex projects which encompass multi-functional areas.
- Monitor progress and direct teams to successfully achieve established budgetary and schedule constraints.
- Review design engineering documentation to verify compliance with technical QA requirements for design, manufacture, construction and installation of nuclear power plant primary and secondary loop structures, systems & components and modifications thereof, as well as for non‑nuclear projects.
- Identify deviations that could create safety/environmental hazards or cause malfunctions.
- Work as team member with cognizant personnel to identify and implement corrective actions.
- Assess and identify issues with supplier performance to assure best cost/value for procured products and services through audits, surveillances, commercial grade surveys, supplier partnerships, etc.
- Streamline processes through development of automated systems to improve productivity and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Communicate changes in Quality policies and systems.
- Develop and conduct educational and training programs.
- Interface with industry organizations and influence appropriate industry quality changes.
- Lead, or participate on internal and industry process improvement committees.
- Provide support to systems assessment process owners.
- Act as quality liaison/coordinator for third party inquiries, including government regulatory agencies, customers, licensees, ASME, ISO, etc.
- Lead teams to direct QA scope for major contracts and serve as customer interface. Interface directly with customer to integrate Westinghouse plans and procedures with customer requirements. Conduct tours of laboratory facility for Customer and Regulatory inspectors / auditors.
- Provide appropriate personnel with periodic updates and recommendations regarding nature and status of work.
- Plan and schedule laboratory resources (personnel and equipment) to support business needs.
What you need to be successful in this role:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or technical degree, Masters a plus
- 8-10 years of relevant experience to include laboratory standards and practices and/or quality
- In-depth knowledge of national consensus standards of quality such as ISO, Six Sigma, ANSI/ASME NQA1, Supplements and Appendices, IEEE Standards and US NRC Regulatory Guide series.
- Working knowledge of ASTM standards and practices, and the ability to research ASTM standards and produce laboratory work instructions for laboratory technicians based on the associated requirements.
- Must possess the ability to write and issue technical reports of laboratory investigations and analyses for review by both technically cognizant and semi-technical reviewers.
- General knowledge of metallurgy and materials science is prefered.
- General knowledge of the major non-destructive testing (NDT) disciplines and their relationship to materials structures is preferred.
- The ability to write and revise laboratory instructions (Quality Control Instructions) to address the technical requirements stated in the Product, Process, or Testing Specifications, as well as the associated safety requirements.
- The ability to design laboratory test fixturing and follow this tooling through Tool Room fabrication is a definite plus.
- Familiarity with materials investigations and failure analyses as well as the comprehensive report out of the findings is preferred.
- Experience with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS or EDAX) is preferred.
- Experience in general laboratory safety practices, chemical safety, and radiological / nuclear criticality safety is preferred.
