Fire Protection Intern – MAY OR SEPTEMBER 2025 INTERNSHIP

Kitchener, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid working arrangement of up to 3 days per week onsite)

 

About the Opportunity

 

Westinghouse Electric Canada is a leading supplier of custom equipment, process systems and engineering consultant services for the Nuclear industry in Canada.  The successful candidate will join an innovative team that supports Westinghouse’s mission to provide clean energy solutions.

 

As a Fire Protection Intern, you will work closely with team members to design and evaluate fire protection systems for nuclear facilities. Fire protection is an interdisciplinary team, enthusiasm to extend your academic experience to fire protection engineering principles is required. Under the guidance of a Senior Engineer / Designer, you will be given the opportunity to work on projects in the nuclear industry. Some opportunities you’ll have access to are but not limited to: 

  • Facility fire alarm and sprinkler design (new construction / retrofit) 
  • Fire hazard analysis 
  • Code compliance reviews  
  • Fire and building code consulting at nuclear power generating facilities, nuclear laboratories 

 

What will you do?

You will assist in evaluating, selecting, specifying, and designing Fire Protection systems; identifying the role of Fire Protection Systems in fire safety design; and assisting in passive fire protection measures in fire safety design.

Your day to day: 

  • Assist with the design of active (fire detection, fire suppression) and passive (fire barriers) fire protection systems in accordance with all applicable governing Codes and Standards and industry best practices 
  • Assist with the creation of system design and layout plans, drawings, schematics, equipment specifications, supporting design calculations, system narratives, and construction specifications 
  • Assist and support in the creation of integration designs between life safety and building services systems as required to comply with all applicable Codes, Standards, and system operating objectives 
  • Assist and support in the creation of detailed installation and commissioning work plans identifying acceptable installation methodologies, sequences, post-installation testing and commissioning, and other associated critical installation parameters based on the system design documentation and applicable Codes and Standards

Who you are: 

Required:  

  • Working on completing a degree in Engineering or a recent graduate
  • Eager to apply course concepts to fire protection principles and design 
  • Willing and able to learn, motivated to ask questions 

Nice-to-have:  

Fire protection draws from many disciplines, the following are nice-to-have. You are not expected to have any of these skills, required skills will be taught during the work-term. 

  • Ability to understand system design and layout plans, schematics, equipment specifications. 
  • Awareness of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, or equivalent. 
  • Willing to attend field surveys and inspections of nuclear power generating facilities or nuclear laboratories 

 

Candidates should be highly motivated and dependable students who are willing to apply their coursework to fire protection principles and design. This a terrific opportunity to support several exciting local projects.
