Are you interested in being part of an innovative team that supports Westinghouse's mission to provide clean energy solutions? At Westinghouse, we recognize that our employees are our most valuable asset and we seek to identify, attract and recruit the most qualified talent while recognizing and encouraging the value of diversity in the global workplace.
We are looking for a Lead HVAC Engineer to own end-to-end mechanical building services (HVAC) engineering. This engineering encompasses complex facilities in Poland, covering concept, basic, and detailed design, and permitting, vendor coordination, construction support, and commissioning. You will define the basis of design. You will lead versatile coordination. You will manage interfaces with authorities, including fire brigade/PSP and Sanepid where applicable. You will ensure compliance with Polish law, national standards, and EU directives.
Responsibilities:
Technical & Design Leadership
-
Lead HVAC engineering from feasibility through IFC. This includes construction support and commissioning for industrial, energy, and commercial facilities, such as turbine halls/control rooms, data centers, process buildings, laboratories, clean spaces, and offices.
-
Establish the Basis of Design (BoD) and design criteria (indoor climate parameters, pressurization, filtration classes, redundancy/N+1, acoustics, energy efficiency).
-
Perform calculations and studies, including heating/cooling load and ventilation rates. Oversee CFD as well as psychrometrics, duct/pipe sizing, hydraulic balancing, energy modeling, noise/vibration, and control sequences.
-
Develop and review deliverables: schematics/P&IDs, layouts, duct and pipe routing, equipment schedules, control narratives, Bill of Quantities, specifications, and BMS/SCADA integration requirements.
-
Support engineer systems such as central/chiller plants, heat pumps, and boilers. They also support AHUs/MAUs, chilled/hot water systems, VRF/VAV, and heat recovery. Additionally, they engineer adiabatic/evaporative cooling, free cooling/economizers, smoke control, and pressurization systems. Furthermore, they work on cleanroom HVAC and specialized ventilation systems, including those for battery rooms, fuel handling, and chemical storage.
-
Support current design to align with Polish/EU efficiency regulations; integrate metering/submetering, demand control, and heat recovery strategies.
Permitting & Compliance (Poland)
-
Plan and manage the permitting pathway and schedule; lead HVAC engineering inputs for environmental (OOŚ/EIA), building permit (Pozwolenie na budowę), and use permit (Pozwolenie na użytkowanie) packages.
-
Support conformity with Building Law, Technical Conditions for buildings and their location, Environmental Law, BHP (occupational H&S), and fire safety requirements.
-
Support coordination with PSP (Państwowa Straż Pożarna) on smoke control, fire/smoke dampers, fire compartments, and HVAC interfaces to fire systems; support approvals of Design Fire Safety Scenario and acceptance inspections.
-
Ensure compliance with PNEN/EU standards, including ventilation and indoor air quality, energy performance of buildings, and HVAC equipment safety. Additionally, ensure compliance with EcoDesign/ErP requirements, Fgas regulation (leak detection, logbooks), and ATEX for hazardous areas if applicable. Furthermore, ensure CE conformity of equipment.
-
Work with Sanepid (where hygienic ventilation standards apply), local utilities for heat/cold supply, and environmental authorities for emissions/noise where relevant.
Coordination & Stakeholder Management
-
Lead multidisciplinary coordination with architectural, structural, electrical (power and controls), plumbing/fire protection, process/industrial systems, and project controls.
-
Engage with clients, authorities, and third parties; run design reviews (30/60/90/IFC) and technical workshops.
-
Prepare technical specifications. Conduct technical bid evaluations (TBE) and manage vendors for major equipment, including chillers, heat pumps, cooling towers/dry coolers, boilers, AHUs, fans, coils, valves, and controls.
-
Oversee factory and site acceptance tests (FAT/SAT), commissioning procedures, TAB (testing, adjusting & balancing), and performance verification.
Delivery, Quality & Risk
-
Define QA/QC requirements for HVAC deliverables; enforce document control and change management.
-
Identify technical and permitting risks; maintain risk registers and mitigation plans.
-
Support construction with RFIs, NCR resolution, site inspections, and redlines/asbuilt documentation.
-
Ensure health & safety by design, maintainability, and operability; develop O&M manuals input.
Qualifications:
-
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
-
8–12+ years of HVAC design and delivery experience for power sector, complex buildings/industrial facilities in Poland.
-
Proven track record leading permitting and authority interfaces in Poland (PSP/fire, building authority, environmental/EIA).
Working knowledge of:
-
Polish legal framework: Prawo budowlane, Warunki Techniczne, Prawo ochrony środowiska, BHP.
-
Standards & directives: PNEN ventilation/indoor air quality, energy performance (EP requirements), EcoDesign/ErP, Fgas, Machinery/EMC/Low Voltage where relevant to packaged systems.
-
Fire safety integration (smoke control, fire dampers, shutdown logic) and acceptance pathways with PSP.
-
Proficiency with HVAC design tools (e.g., Revit/CAD, HAP/TRACE/IDeA/Hevacomp, CFD exposure), and document coordination platforms (e.g., BIM 360/Navisworks).
-
Fluent Polish, with professional English (written & spoken).
-
Professional credentials (e.g., Polish building design authorizations/uprawnienia—sanitary discipline; SEP E/D for coordination with electrical teams).
-
Experience in power/energy, data centers, pharma/cleanrooms, hospitals/labs, or manufacturing.
-
Familiarity with BMS/SCADA, open protocols (BACnet/Modbus), cybersecurity considerations for building systems.
-
Knowledge of noise/vibration control, acoustics, and environmental noise assessments.
-
Experience with district heating/cooling interconnections, waste heat recovery, and heat pump electrification projects.
