The Westinghouse Electric Company Specialty Welding & Machining Group is a project-based organization that makes field repairs to nuclear power stations. The Senior Manufacturing Supervisor works at headquarters and is responsible for the manufacturing of specialized tooling, repair parts and consumables, and training mock-ups to support field projects. The Manufacturing Department is broken down into an in-house machine shop and a mechanical/electrical assembly shop.
Your Day to Day:
- Lead and enable a group of employees to succeed in the safe daily operation of machining and assembly activities in support of power plant outage work. Accountable for the daily activities of machining (CNC & manual) and assembly operations to meet the high-quality standards required in the nuclear industry and to adhere to demanding schedules needed to satisfy customer requirements.
- Develop and communicate a manufacturing schedule/calendar. Implement this schedule as a planning tool for outage project support. Make or influence decisions regarding work acceptance by conveying capabilities, workload, and deadlines. Transmit routine communications regarding manufacturing priorities based on business needs.
- Plan and assign work, implement policies and procedures, and recommend and execute improvements in production methods, equipment, operating procedures, and working conditions to continuously enhance Safety, Quality, Delivery, People, and Cost within the department.
- Organize resources through routine meetings and communications. Oversee and drive improvements in the performance of shop machinists and the manufacturing group. Track and optimize work productivity and reduce waste of materials and labor hours. Determine and implement necessary training to ensure team proficiency.
- Monitor budget and spending, making decisions on make-vs-buy and labor utilization to enhance business unit performance. Institute cost controls in the manufacturing process. Ensure accurate tracking of material and labor costs associated with project support. Optimize cost tracking tools to inform the bidding process. Record and report production costs related to projects. Curate the selection of outside vendors to support outsourced work.
- Assess manufacturing capabilities and gaps and implement requisite improvements to close gaps and enhance capabilities. Monitor capital assets (machining equipment) and develop a maintenance, replacement/improvement plan to ensure specialty machining capabilities support business unit requirements.
- Establish standards and processes to support planning, organizing, communicating, and monitoring department resources to achieve effective utilization of employees, equipment, and material consistent with safety, regulatory, quality, productivity, and financial requirements. Ensure customer requirements for product quality and on-time shipments are met. Determine appropriate priority for work requests and provide feedback to requesters when necessary.
- Foster a safety and quality-conscious environment through the use and reinforcement of Human Performance tools and Nuclear Safety Culture Traits and Behaviors. Ensure personnel compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality requirements. Monitor personnel and plant activities to identify unfavorable trends. Coach, train, and hold employees accountable for demonstrating safe behavior in the workplace.
- Effectively set goals aligned with company objectives to drive organizational performance. Lead with safety. Ensure personnel compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality requirements. Monitor personnel and the area to observe unfavorable trends through the utilization of Visual Management and observations. Communicate discrepancies and solicit support as needed.
- Determine task performance/skill requirements. Evaluate employee skill levels using training skills matrices, focus training plans on deficiencies, and reinforce employee development and training. Ensure adequate depth of knowledge, workforce development, and critical skills management throughout the organization.
- Apply analytical skills to production or equipment issues within the department and plant-wide to initiate proper corrective action. Collaborate with employees to establish and maintain an organization capable of operating efficiently and effectively in the production, inspection, and shipment of products. Create an environment of teamwork to maximize shared knowledge, provide support, and promote open communication. This role will primarily be Monday to Friday during the day, but there will be some opportunities weekend work or off-hours support for special projects.
Who You Are:
- Bachelors degree in a technical discipline required. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Five years of experience in a technical and/or supervisory role required.
- 10-15 years relevant experience preferred
