Works toward developing and implementing policies and practices to identify/mitigate hazardous conditions within the workplace and external environments; investigating accidents and environmental incidents and liaising with engineers, management, and health and safety regulatory authorities to identify causes of accidents and prevent their recurrence; providing advice and training on safety protocols and conducting audits to ensure compliance with organization and government standards related to environmental health and safety; maintaining relationships with the community, environmental groups, and other stakeholders impacted by the environmental performance of the organization. Responsibilities typically include managing large projects or processes with limited oversight from manager. May coach, review, and delegate work to lower-level professionals. Problems faced are difficult and often complex.
Your day to day:
- Acts as a technical lead for EHS issues and opportunities, in areas of industrial safety that include rigging and lifting, material handling, energy control, fall protection and prevention and electrical safety.
- Provides subject matter expertise, assistance, and support for safety issues site wide
- Serves as key point of contact for safety issues and events.
- Determines scope, assembles, and leads interdisciplinary teams to create and implement new or improved safety and health standards, documentation, and processes driving best in class methods to achieve compliance to Westinghouse’s rigorous safety and health expectations
- Drives the development and sharing of essential health and safety learning (including operating experience, lessons learned and best practices).
- Effectively communicates new initiatives, standards, regulations, and events throughout the organization
- Collaborates with colleagues across multiple disciplines within the company to assure effective program implementation and cohesiveness
- Leads and/or participates in incident investigations or reviews
- Promotes the successful integration of safety and health risk management into key business operations, processes, and results
- Develops, implements, and maintains site safety and health programs, tools and standards, including training and communication in a manner that ensures compliance to regulatory and internal requirements as well as business needs
- Conducts / facilitates audits and assessments and identify, implement, or partner with sites and business functions to implement effective corrections and controls
- Leads improvement initiatives through data analysis related to site specific safety and health issues
- Drives safety first culture. Practices and promotes safe work habits and adheres to safety procedures and guidelines. Promotes health and safety awareness throughout the organization though effective employee communications, participation, and programming
- Strategizes with EHS Manager to help lead the site to obtain Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star status
What you need to be successful in this role:
- Bachelors' Degree in Safety Engineering/Sciences or similar.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in a moderate to high industrial safety / health risk workplace
- CSP or equivalent professional certification(s) is required
- Highly knowledgeable of safety and health regulations and regulatory agency interaction processes
- Demonstrated attention to detail, effective decision-making in a fast-paced setting.
- Ability to fulfill responsibilities with a global mindset
- Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing including the ability to effectively present information to workers and leadership.
- Highly knowledgeable in the methods used for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control.
- Strong ability to respond effectively to sensitive issues.
- Must be able to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex documents.
- Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills.
- Strong ability and flexibility to work in a team setting and lead a team when necessary.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal, negotiation and persuasion skills
- Experience auditing safety and health requirements/programs and EHS management systems is required. Experience leading comprehensive audits and post audit activities is preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite and personal computer skills (required)
- Knowledgeable of behavior-based safety principles and safety management systems
