This position provides leadership, strategy, and direction for the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) department at the Western Zirconium site. The primary objective is to effectively implement and continually improve processes to ensure the safe, regulatory compliant production of commercial nuclear fuel. This management position serves on the site leadership team, provides strategic direction and all of the day-to-day operations and activities of the EHS group comprised of industrial safety, environmental performance and compliance, health physics, radiation safety, fire protection, training, and site physical security.  Western Zirconium is a site with complex regulatory requirements and faces critical enforcement activity with stated and federal agencies.

 

Your Day to Day:

  • Responsible for developing comprehensive EHS Strategy to identify, quantify, and mitigate risk to the environment, people, process, and profitability of ongoing complicated, diverse operations at Western Zirconium site 
  • Performs as thought leader for a complex chemical and metallurgical operating plant with complex regulatory requirements combined with significant legacy environmental issues to resolve
  • Serves as an agent for change, challenging the status quo and enabling / empowering new and innovative solutions to known problems
  • Develops, evaluates, implements, and directs environmental health and safety policies, programs and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, regulations and requirements
  • Develops and leads comprehensive cross discipline EHS improvement plans across all of WZ site and operations
  • Leads, coaches, and develops cross-functional team / staff of Environment, Health, Safety, and Security subject matter experts and leverages corporate support function to complement known gaps
  • Utilizes expert Project Management leadership skills to ensure workplans are developed, executed, and documented
  • Serves as member of the Site Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure impactful thought leadership and effective decision making on programmatic issues in the areas of environment, health, safety and security
  • Effectively influences peer leaders regarding their ownership for day to day operations related to EHS excellence
  • Ensures proper and timely investigation and reporting of environmental health and safety associated incidents
  • Develops and maintains impactful working relationships with key external stakeholders, regulators and the public at large
  • Manages relationships / contracts with various contractors/consultants to achieve EHS excellence while controlling cost
  • Ensures determination of root cause and implementation of appropriate corrective action including development/enhancement of environmental health and safety policies related to events
  • Leads the EHS function and maintains focus on the technical expertise, bench strength, and leadership/change management skills necessary to support the WZ Operations
  • Ensure comprehensive strategic/continuous improvement plan exists for regulatory compliance activities
  • Effectively engages and influences entities including corporate organizations and regulators

What you need to be successful in this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. Ideally with focus on environmental engineering, Master's degree is preferred
  • 10 years of related experience. 5 years of management / project management experience is preferred.
  • PE preferred in related disciplines of Civil or Environmental Engineering

The following credentials would be advantageous to a candidate:

  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • OSHA or BCSP Certification (ASP, CSP, etc)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Organizational Management certification

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven organizational and project leadership acumen
  • Ability to understand and navigate numerous and complex environmental health and safety laws and regulations and their application in a manufacturing facility – prefer nuclear industry
  • Experience and proven success working in highly regulated manufacturing environment, preferably at multiple locations which allows for wider scope and depth.
  • Ability to collaborate productively with regulatory agencies at local, state, and federal levels
  • Experience managing teams and/or complex projects within large organizations
  • Creating systems and processes to ensure work is done both efficiently and effectively
  • Solid background and knowledge of management principles, practices, and concepts
  • Expert project management skills
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills
  • Superior ability to influence / persuade stakeholders at all levels, both internal and external
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving capability; exceptional communication, organization, and leadership ability; ability to flourish even when dealing with ambiguity
  • Strong business acumen, short and long term business understanding
