Lead Engineer, CanDU SME -  Primary Location  Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

This is a challenging, senior level position that will require a solid technical background and extensive experience in the industry.  Strong interpersonal and communication abilities are essential to be successful in our team-based environment. 


Your day to day:

Westinghouse Electric Canada is a supplier of custom equipment, process systems and engineering consultant services for the Nuclear industry in Canada. 

As a part of our growing team, the successful candidate will be the primary technical resource in the business, supporting the execution of project deliverables while providing technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to the technical team.

  • Act as technical counsel to a skilled team of Engineers and Designers focused on delivering world class products and services to our customers
  • Lead and/or participate in the development on new market opportunities
  • Participate in high-level, conceptual discussions related to developing innovative solutions to address customer challenges
  • Support new, innovative technologies emerging in the global nuclear industry (e.g. SMR, WEC’s eVinci, etc…)
  • Providing technical input and oversight to the development of conceptual/detailed equipment designs as they progress through a structured design process.
  • Review/approval of final drawings, technical specifications, technical reports and analysis to ensure alignment with Nuclear CSA and ASME standards.
  • Coaching, mentoring and support of technical development of Engineering team members with respect to CanDU design and operation.
  • Represent the business in external forums as a subject matter expert in CanDU systems and/or specialized support equipment
  • Support a culture of collaboration and knowledge growth within the team.
  • Some travel is required to support customers



What you bring:

  • Licensed P.Eng. member of Professional Engineers Ontario (Mechanical Engineering)
  • Minimum 15+ years of relevant experience in the CanDU industry
  • Thorough knowledge of CanDU operating plants, including reactor components, supporting systems and balance of plant equipment.
  • Extensive experience in the design of custom equipment, typically: steel structures, hoisting systems, mechanical drive/positioning systems and shielded containers.
  • Experienced in pressure retaining systems to CSA and ASME design codes.
  • Experience in conceptual design development, design reviews and engineering change control processes.
  • Knowledge of FEA using software such as ANSYS, Ceaser or Autopipe.
  • Experience interfacing with customer representatives and providing oversight of vendors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfortable leading meetings and giving presentations.
  • Knowledge and experience working to nuclear quality assurance programs that meet the requirements of CAN/CSA-N285.0 or NQA-1.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, experience working effectively in a team environment.


  • Application of the relevant codes and standards applicable to the design of nuclear components and systems including specialized tooling and remote handling equipment.
