About the role:
In the Mechanical Design Engineering role, you will be responsible for designing mechanical systems and components for both the traditional nuclear market and new projects aimed at developing nuclear technology and future nuclear‑powered systems. You will report to the Manager, Material Handling Engineering, and be located at one of our facilities in Peterborough, Burlington, or Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Employees working in hybrid roles are expected to work on‑site at the Peterborough, Burlington, or Kitchener office two days per week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop 3D models, detailed manufacturing drawings and bills of materials for complex electro-mechanical first of a kind tooling
- Assemble and test custom equipment through the design evolution from prototype to finished product
- Assist with the development of test procedures for systems to ensure compliance with design specifications
- Assist with the operation of the final tooling system in the customer facilities
- Perform both classical hand calculations and analysis (including FEA) to qualify systems or components against applicable codes & standards
- Prepare concise design reports and technical specifications.
- Promote innovation and new methods in the development of new technologies and nuclear systems
- Collaborate globally within the Westinghouse Engineering framework alongside SMEs and nuclear specialists
- Support resolution of issues throughout design, manufacture and testing of systems or components
Qualifications:
- Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering from an accredited institution
- 0 to 2 minimum years of relevant experience, recent new graduates without experience will be considered.
- The following experience will be considered an asset:
- Experience in conceptual design development, design reviews and engineering change control processes.
- Experience in the design/building of custom equipment typically: steel structures, hoisting/lifting systems, mechanical drive/positioning systems, electro-mechanical systems.
- Experience in working within 3D CAD systems
- Experience with manufacturing techniques, welding procedures or specifications and associated inspection techniques.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, experience working effectively in a team environment
We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $62,400 to $78,000 per year.
