Health Physicist

Springfields Fuels is chiefly a nuclear fuel manufacturing site supported by a diverse waste and residue treatment capability. As a recognised national UK asset, the company continues to invest into its future in both fuel production and waste treatment. The organisation is consequently looking to grow its team of Radiation Protection professionals and a vacancy exists for a Health Physicist working under the direction of the Head of Radiation Protection. Career progression to achieve RPA certification is supported.



  • Provide of Radiological Safety advice to operational business units, presenting a strong ALARP position with the purpose of assisting local management in maintaining good safety performance.
  • Assist the commercial bid process by communicating the radiological risks and appropriate mitigation are fully explored and understood for any new process.
  • Compliance oversight for activities across all site operations including the collation and reporting of performance metrics and incidents chiefly through supporting the work of local Lead RPSs working in the areas
  • Delivery of Radiation Safety training course to site personnel
  • Investigate Radiological incidents, trends and potential exposure capturing learning and initiating corrective action as necessary.
  • Interpretation and reviewing of internal and external dosimetry data.
  • Preparation, review and approval of related documents within the area of relevance to the role (Site instructions, Method statements, modification proposals, ALARP assessments).
  • Participate in the emergency response programme which entails emergency exercises, off-site response and joining an on-call responders rota.
  • Undertake radiation risk assessments and support the implementation of effective risk management controls
  • Critically review, analyse and summarise data in order to draw conclusions and make recommendations


Qualifications and Experience


  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in a scientific discipline (or greater than 5 years working in a similar field with proven experience)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the UK legislations associated with Ionising Radiations (IRR17, CDG19, REPPIR)
  • Working knowledge of common microsoft office programs including cloud-based systems; MS Teams, Sharepoint.
  • Experience operating as a Health Physicist within the nuclear industry and ideally with uranium-based materials.



  • Detailed knowledge & understanding of instrumentation for nuclear operations including waste disposal & recycling.
  • Experience of radioactive waste management.
  • Expertise in radiation protection instrumentation.

  • Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to establish relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • The ability to write well-structured reports that present clear arguments with a sound basis for recommendations
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and committed to delivering continuous improvement in challenging circumstances
