Radiation Engineering & Analysis Engineer

Welcome to the future of nuclear energy, where Westinghouse Electric Company is leading the field with expertise and innovation to shape the power of tomorrow. At Westinghouse, innovation is in our DNA.  We are creative. We think differently. We reimagine the possible across the nuclear industry every day.

About the role:

The Radiation Engineering & Analysis (REA) group has supported the design and analysis of Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) since the early days of the commercial nuclear power industry, with its scope expanding from the Westinghouse fleet to include the Combustion Engineering PWR fleet, the BWR fleet, and several advanced reactor designs such as the Westinghouse AP1000® plant and eVinciTM microreactor.

You will work in small teams on complex nuclear engineering problems, with a focus on radiation transport and radiation source terms.

You will report to the Radiation Engineering & Analysis Manager and be located at the Madrid headquarters in San Sebastián de los Reyes. The role is hybrid with the possibility to combine work from home and in the office.

Key Responsibilities:

REA engineers are responsible for design and analysis work related to radiation, radionuclides, and shielding.  We use many codes that were developed in-house including RAPTOR-M3G, our latest 3D discrete-ordinates tool, which supplement our use of publicly available nuclear codes (e.g. MCNP, DOORS and SCALE) to meet the needs of our customers.

You will be responsible for:

  • Radiation shielding calculations
  • Radiation source term calculations
    • Post-irradiation compositions using SCALE/ORIGEN, coolant activity
  • Support for the Decontamination & Decommissioning (D&D) of retiring plants
    • Spent fuel characterization, plant decommissioning support, and fuel cask analysis
  • Decay heat analysis
  • Operating Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) support
    • Accident evaluation in compliance with Chapter 15 of NUREG-0800, related NRC Regulatory guides and Spanish Licensing requirements
    • Set-point calculations for liquid and gaseous effluents monitors
  • Neutron transport calculations in and around the reactor vessel (most calculations are performed in the Linux environment)
    • Review plant drawings and building transport models
    • Perform fluence, activation, heating rate, and dosimetry calculations
    • Critically analyze results and produce technical documentation
  • Radiation transport with deterministic codes and Monte Carlo codes
  • Radiation protection support

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Industrial Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field
  • 1+ years of experience and recent graduates
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish
  • Experience with Linux, programming, and computational simulation
  • Experience with relevant computer codes (MCNP, SCALE)
