Head of Environment and Sustainability

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Environment and Sustainability to lead environmental strategy and sustainability initiatives at our nuclear fuel manufacturing site. As a key member of the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) function, you will ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, drive sustainability goals, build and lead a team of specialists to deliver industry-leading environmental performance. This role requires both technical expertise and strategic leadership to ensure our operations align with our commitment to permits, sustainability and environmental excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
• Develop and implement the site’s environmental and sustainability strategy, ensuring alignment with company objectives, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
• Champion sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and carbon reduction programs, to achieve corporate environmental goals.
• Act as the primary environmental advisor to senior management and other stakeholders, providing insight into regulatory changes and sustainability trends.
Regulatory Compliance and Governance:
• Ensure compliance with all environmental legislation, permits, and licenses, including those specific to nuclear-licensed sites.
• Lead environmental risk assessments, audits, and inspections to identify risks and opportunities for improvement.
• Manage relationships with regulatory bodies, such as the Environment Agency and Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), ensuring timely reporting and maintaining a positive reputation.
Team and Stakeholder Management:
• Lead, mentor, and develop the environmental and sustainability team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, engineering, and procurement, to embed environmental considerations into decision-making.
• Represent the site at corporate sustainability forums, industry groups, and public engagements.
Performance Management:
• Monitor and report environmental performance metrics, ensuring alignment with key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve environmental performance, utilizing the latest technologies and practices.
• Drive projects related to resource efficiency, renewable energy, and waste management, ensuring measurable outcomes.
Essential Technical Skills and Experience:
1.Nuclear Industry Expertise:
• In-depth understanding of environmental regulations and standards applicable to nuclear-licensed sites.
• Experience managing environmental programs in high-hazard, regulated industries.
2.Environmental Science and Engineering:
• Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Strong knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and their application.
• Proven ability to conduct complex environmental risk assessments and implement mitigation measures.
3.Regulatory Compliance:
• Demonstrable experience engaging with UK environmental regulators (e.g., Environment Agency, ONR).
• Experience in preparing and managing permits, compliance reports, and regulatory submissions.
Essential Leadership and Management Skills:
• Strategic Vision: Ability to develop and execute long-term environmental strategies that align with corporate goals.
• Team Leadership: Proven experience leading and developing high-performing teams, fostering a culture of accountability and innovation.
• Communication and Influence: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels, from operational teams to senior executives.
• Project Management: Skilled in leading multi-disciplinary projects, managing budgets, and delivering results within tight deadlines.
• Change Management: Experience driving cultural and operational change in support of sustainability and environmental goals.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
• Chartered status with a relevant professional body (e.g., CIWEM, IEMA, or similar).
• Qualification in environmental management, sustainability, or a related field.
• Knowledge of sustainability frameworks such as Net Zero planning, circular economy principles, and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
• Experience in stakeholder engagement with the local community and public-facing roles.
• Familiarity with cutting-edge environmental technologies and digital tools for performance monitoring and reporting.
