The organisation is consequently looking to grow its team of Radiation Protection professionals and a vacancy exists Health Physics Monitor Instructor working under the direction of the Head of Radiation Protection.  This role would suit an experienced current or former Health Physics Surveyor/Monitor seeking to progress their role.

Responsibilities

 

  • Supporting the Head of Radiation Protection in the development and enactment of a Site Radiation and Contamination Monitoring Strategy appropriate to the site’s activities and radiation risks.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive training programmes for health physics monitors.
  • Support and assess staff members to ensure they meet the required standards to achieve their qualifications. This may include planning and marking works and through observations.
  • Instruct personnel on radiation safety protocols, procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Conduct hands-on training sessions to enhance practical skills in radiation detection and monitoring.
  • Provide guidance and support to health physics monitors to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with site management to identify training needs and develop tailored programs to address specific requirements.
  • Stay current with industry regulations and best practices to ensure training materials are up to date.
  • Advise against instrument qualification, selection and suitability as used for routine surveillance and including the determination of waste sentencing.
  • Preparation, review and approval of related documents within the area of relevance to the role.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Health Physics Monitoring (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working as a Health Physics Surveyor/Monitor
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).
  • Detailed knowledge & understanding of instrumentation for nuclear operations including waste disposal & recycling.
  • Experience for carrying out functional tests of radiation protection monitoring instrumentation using calibrated radioactive sealed sources.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the UK legislations associated with Ionising Radiations and best practice.
  • Working knowledge of common microsoft office programs including cloud-based systems; MS Teams, Sharepoint.
  • Strong understanding of ALARP and its application at an operational level.
  • Proven track record in developing and delivering training programmes.
     

Desirable:

 

  • Train-the-trainer certification or teaching experience in a related field would be beneficial, however training will be provided for the right candidate. 
  • Knowledge of the Environmental Permitting Regulations/Radioactive Substances Act.
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Site Licence conditions.
  • Working knowledge of transport arrangements for radioactive materials.
  • Expertise in radiation protection instrumentation.
  • Current member of Society of Radiological Protection
