As an Industrial Thermal Insulation Technician, you will manage the installation, maintenance, and removal of thermal and acoustic insulation systems on industrial equipment and pipework. You will ensure energy efficiency, personnel protection, and system performance while maintaining strict compliance with UK health, safety, and environmental regulations.

You will report to the Maintenance supervisors and be located at Westinghouse - Springfields Fuels Ltd - Preston Lancashire.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install thermal insulation materials (e.g. mineral wool, PIR, phenolic foam, calcium silicate) on pipework, vessels, tanks, and ducting.
  • Fit and secure protective cladding (aluminum, stainless steel, galvanised steel) to protect insulation systems from weather and mechanical damage.
  • Measure and cut insulation and cladding materials to specification using hand and power tools.
  • Fabricate sheet metal components including bends, valves, tees, and bespoke fittings.
  • Interpret technical drawings, isometrics, and work instructions accurately.
  • Carry out inspection, maintenance, and repair of existing insulation systems.
  • Safely remove and replace damaged or degraded insulation (excluding licensed asbestos removal work).
  • Install and repair fire protection on unsealed penetrations.
  • Ensure all work complies with method statements, risk assessments, and permit systems.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship, cleanliness, and site safety.
  • Collaborate with other trades and site personnel to meet project deadlines.
  • Report hazards, near misses, and quality issues promptly.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all site-specific procedures.
  • Adhere to COSHH regulations when handling insulation materials.
  • Use and maintain PPE and equipment appropriately.
  • Work safely in challenging environments including at height, confined spaces, and live industrial sites.
  • Participate in toolbox talks and safety briefings.

Skills

  • Strong practical skills in insulation installation and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Good knowledge of insulation materials, systems, and industry standards.

Qualifications:Qualifications and Training (Essential)

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Thermal Insulation or equivalent practical experience.
  • Asbestos Awareness certification.
  • Manual Handling and Working at Height training.
  • IPAF and/or PASMA certification.
  • Confined Space training.
  • Abrasive Wheels certification.
  • NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Passive Fire Protection
  • Full UK driving licence.

 

Experience

  • Experience working in industrial environments such as energy, petrochemical, nuclear, or manufacturing sectors.
  • Proven track record in insulation installation and fabrication work.

Working Conditions

  • Site-based role requiring flexibility.
  • Exposure to industrial environments and outdoor conditions.
  • Use of PPE and adherence to strict site safety rules required at all times.
