We are looking for an individual with experience in Control, Electrical & Instrumentation (CE&I) to join the Westinghouse Projects Office at the Springfields Nuclear Licensed Site in Preston, Lancashire. You will report to the Design Office Manager. This Junior CE&I Designer position is ideal for candidates with relevant qualifications and experience who are keen to progress into a full CE&I Designer role.
Development may include the future opportunity to undertake further academic qualifications, such as an engineering degree or similar.
You will contribute to the engineering designs for projects that focus on modifying and improving existing nuclear chemical processing facilities. We will provide comprehensive training, making this opportunity well suited to individuals from a CE&I craft or maintenance background who wish to grow into a design-focused career path.
As a Control, Electrical & Instrumentation (CE&I) Designer you will deliver high-quality CE&I engineering designs that meet project, safety, regulatory, and quality requirements. Work packages may span the full design lifecycle, from concept development through detailed design to commissioning and handover.
Key Responsibilities (initially performed under direct supervision, guidance & training):
- Produce equipment specifications, initiate tenders, and evaluate supplier submissions.
- Contribute to and help present technical solutions at design reviews, HAZOPs, and other formal assessments.
- Develop detailed design drawings and documentation, commissioning support documentation and design handover packs.
- Review and check CE&I designs and guiding and mentoring junior designers/draughts persons within the project team.
- Provide Intelligent Customer oversight for designs delivered by external consultancies (safety, quality, scope, compliance).
- Produce design deliverables which meet required standards and are compliant with relevant regulations.
Technical Responsibilities
- Produce CE&I drawings such as block cable diagrams and single-line diagrams instrument loop diagrams, schematics.
- Perform cable calculations manually or using Amtech/Trimble.
- Prepare and management of design governance documentation (Design Quality Plans, Design Risk Assessments, Design Reviews.
- Maintain ownership of design intent from design through to installation and commissioning.
- Produce and check documentation required for UKCA / CE Marking technical files.
- Provide supporting information for safety case development, including engineering substantiation.
- Provide input for project estimates, schedules, and resource planning.
- Develop designs for small power distribution systems.
- Specify and select instrumentation including designs associated with installation requirements (e.g. Instrumentation loops, instrument pipework, etc.).
- Produce CE&I designs for modifications to process plant instrumentation and PLC-based control systems.
- Work in accordance with design governance procedures and relevant UK regulations (e.g., CDM 2015).
- Use CE&I design software tools: AutoCAD, Amtech/Trimble, Sistema, Dialux.
Qualifications:
- Design Experience would be beneficial, but not essential, as full training will be given to the successful candidate.
- One of the following: ONC, HNC, HND, and BEng(Hons) degree in a relevant CE&I discipline
- Minimum of 5+ years' experience working as an electrician, instrument mechanic or a similar electrical/instrument craft based role.
- Nuclear industry experience would be beneficial, but not essential.
- Experienced & qualified in BS7671, 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
