As a PDG Engineer you will provide senior technical leadership for the design, deployment, qualification and sustainment of a ubiquitous network of passive enrichment monitoring. You will act as the technical architect working with the projects team to define the end‑to‑end technical solution and ensuring robust, statistically defensible gamma spectrometric measurement capability.

You will also provides technical governance across design authority, change control, qualification and documentation, for nuclear fuel manufacturing.

Also, you will provide technical support for gamma spectrometry, including laboratory and field‑based applications, underpinning nuclear materials characterization, safeguards and quality assurance activities.

You will report to the PDG Engineering Manager (or equivalent senior technical manager).

 

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Architecture & System Deployment

  • Be a technical architect and design authority for the specification, design, integration and deployment of a site‑wide network of passive enrichment monitoring systems.
  • Define and maintain technical requirements, performance criteria, specifications and standards covering detectors, electronics, data acquisition, communications and data management.
  • Provide oversight and approval of engineering changes, modifications and upgrades to gamma spectrometry and monitoring systems, including assessment of technical risk and compliance.
  • Support planning, execution and assessment of system qualification and improvement programmes, ensuring fitness for purpose throughout the system lifecycle.

Gamma Spectrometry & Data Analysis

  • Provide subject‑matter expertise in gamma spectrometry, including detector selection, calibration strategies and uncertainty management.
  • Lead and oversee statistical analysis of gamma spectrometric data, including spectral analysis, peak fitting, background treatment, trending and enrichment determination.
  • Develop, validate and maintain data analysis methodologies and tools to ensure results are robust, traceable and defensible.
  • Support investigation and resolution of measurement anomalies, non‑conformances and quality issues associated with gamma spectrometric systems.

Analytical Services & Field Instrument Support

  • Provide specialist technical support to the for laboratory and field‑deployed gamma spectrometry instruments.
  • Support operation, troubleshooting, maintenance and improvement of analytical and field systems, including input to procurement, acceptance and commissioning activities.

Technical Governance, Documentation & Collaboration

  • Prepare, peer review and approve technical reports, specifications, justifications and change documentation in support of design, qualification and operational decisions.
  • Maintain oversight of relevant technical documentation, configuration records and system baselines.
  • Act as a technical authority, providing mentoring, coaching and technical direction to engineers, scientists and analysts.
  • Interface with stakeholders across engineering, operations, safeguards, quality, suppliers and regulators as required.
  • Support cross‑discipline technical investigations and continuous improvement initiatives related to nuclear measurement capability.
  • Act as an interface and link to the university sector in support of research through projects and PhDs.

 

Qualifications:

  • PhD‑level qualification in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g. nuclear engineering, physics, applied physics, radiochemistry or similar).
  • Extensive knowledge and practical experience of gamma spectrometry and associated instrumentation.
  • Strong capability in statistical data analysis applied to spectrometric measurements.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience with passive nuclear measurement systems or enrichment monitoring.
  • Knowledge of nuclear safeguards, materials accountancy or regulatory measurement expectations.
  • Experience supporting field‑deployable, unattended or in‑situ instrumentation in nuclear or industrial environments.·
  • Familiarity with uncertainty analysis, method validation, change control and quality management systems.
  • The role may require occasional business travel.
  • The post holder is expected to maintain technical currency and contribute to continuous improvement of measurement and monitoring capability.
