As a Radiation Protection Adviser you will provide comprehensive strategic, regulatory, and operational support to ensure robust radiation protection across the site. It involves interpreting UK legislation, overseeing compliance, and advising on radiological risks for processes, equipment, and waste. You will deliver key functions in dosimetry review, waste management, incident response, and emergency preparedness. A core responsibility is to produce clear documentation and communicate radiological risks to allow safe and compliant operations. Additionally, you will contribute to broader Health & Safety objectives by promoting safety culture, supporting investigations, and driving continuous improvement.

You will report to the Head of Radiation Protection and be located at Springfields Fuel Site near Preston.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Strategic & Regulatory Support

- Help develop and implement the site's Radiation Protection Strategy.

- Interpret and apply UK regulations (IRR17, REPPIR, CDG19) to ensure compliance.

- Provide radiological advice for new processes, radiation generators, and high-activity sources.

Operational Oversight

- Conduct radiation risk assessments and support ALARP-based control measures.

- Oversee compliance across site operations, including performance metrics and incident reporting.

- Advise on instrument selection, qualification, and suitability for surveillance and waste sentencing.

Dosimetry & Waste Management

- Review internal and external dosimetry data.

- Participate in corporate RWA arrangements for waste handling and clearance.

- Provide radiological intelligence for waste sentencing and transport.

Training & Incident Response

- Prepare and deliver training within the Radiation Safety programme.

- Investigate radiological incidents and trends, initiating corrective actions.

- Participate in emergency response exercises and on-call responder rota.

Documentation & Communication

- Prepare, review, and approve site instructions, ALARP assessments, and transport risk assessments.

- Communicate radiological risks and mitigation strategies to support business growth.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

- Promote a strong safety culture across all radiological and non-radiological operations.

- Ensure that the site aligns all radiation protection activities with its broader Health and Safety policies and procedures.

- Actively contribute to hazard identification, risk assessment, and the implementation of control measures in line with HSE guidance.

- Support incident investigations and root cause analysis for both radiological and conventional safety events.

- Liaise with the site Health and Safety team to ensure integrated safety management across departments.

- Participate in safety audits, inspections, and reviews, providing expert input on radiological safety aspects.

- Champion continuous improvement in health and safety performance, including the development of training and awareness programmes.

- Ensure compliance with PPE requirements and safe working practices in controlled and supervised areas.

 

Qualifications:

 

Essential:

- Current Certificate of Competence as an RPA issued by RPA2000

- Strong knowledge of UK radiation legislation (IRR17, REPPIR, CDG19).

- Operational understanding of ALARP principles.

Desirable:

- Experience in uranium-based nuclear operations.

- Expertise in radiation protection instrumentation and waste management.

- RWA certification and knowledge of radioactive material transport.
