Proposal for a thesis regarding the possibility to measure the electrical conductivity in zirconium using a multi frequency eddy current technique and the possibility to use the electrical conductivity to determine the hydrogen content in the material.

 

The thesis will consist of an experimental part which will include measurements using a multi frequency eddy current equipment on test samples (could be zirconium rods and plates). The experimental work will also include measurements of the electrical conductivity of the test samples with an alternative technique. Parameters as calibration materials, frequency range and model parameters (for the eddy current evaluation) are important to investigate to be able to understand the hydrogen content on the measured electrical conductivity. Several test materials, PWR and BWR zirconium material will be included in the scope.

 

The first part of the thesis work will be the experimental design to be able to cover different test and calibration materials as well as different parameters for the eddy current equipment. Measurements of the electrical conductivity using an alternative method on calibration and test samples will be included in the work (could be done at Universities or Alleima).

 

First part of the experimental work will be done on non-hydrided samples from different material lots to cover a spread in electrical conductivities. After the first part is finalized and an understanding of the capability of determine the electrical conductivity using the multi frequency eddy current technique established, the next phase can start using pre-hydrided samples of the different materials to investigate the change in electrical conductivity caused by the hydrogen content in the material.

 

The number of different materials for the test and calibration rods will be determined by the length of the thesis work. The report should also include theoretical part discussion multi frequency eddy current and possible changes in electrical conductivity in zirconium materials due to the hydrogen content.

 

All the equipment including multi frequency eddy current device will be provided by Westinghouse. The experimental work can take place at Westinghouse in Västerås or at the University. All the equipment can easily be transferred to any location.
