If this sounds like an environment you would thrive in, we have an exciting leadership opportunity within our Electromechanical Handling Tool Design team.  This highly capable engineering design group focuses on the design of specialized machines used for the physical handling (manipulating/gross positioning, storing, protecting) of materials/components, often to mechanize otherwise manual methods. These products consist of mostly mechanical mechanisms, integrating the use of custom parts (e.g., weldments, machined parts) and off-the-shelf parts (e.g., gearboxes, linear rails, conveyors, hydraulics/pneumatics) with some basic integration of industrial electrical equipment (e.g., machine safe-guarding, gross motion control).

 

Please note, this hybrid working team is predominantly located in Peterborough, Ontario and therefore this position will likely be based in Canada. Travel to this office 3+ days/week is likely required. Periodic travel to other Canada, US and Spain offices will be required and therefore it is a bona fide requirement to be able to travel to these nuclear regulated sites in these countries.

 

It is a bona fide job requirement to be eligible and authorized to travel to the U.S. on Westinghouse business, and such travel is subject to the rules and regulations of the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as compliance with all applicable U.S. export laws and regulations.

 

What will you do?

The Operations Lead for this group is responsible for leading the design and engineering operations of the group.

Your day to day: 

  • Key interface between business units, other engineering managers and the respective handling tooling team to address first level resource escalation concerns with PMs (i.e., day to day operations/resource planning).
  • Product line offer input lead and/or technical input lead for new opportunities, therefore this person would have extensive engineering knowledge and is recognized as a near ‘subject matter expert’ in one or more engineering and/or manufacturing specialties, and is capable to lead engineering efforts.
  • Mentors and leads teams of engineers and designers in the execution of complex project or process development tasks.
  • Proactively drives Continuous improvement and recommends and/or leads alterations to improve quality of products, QA processes/procedures, as well as their introduction to change management.
  • Setting day-to-day operational objectives for individuals or teams, ensuring that policies, practices and procedures are understood and followed.
  • Customer facing, supporting opportunities review and backlog design reviews
  • Supports the department supervisor/manager with the overall growth (hiring) strategy of the team and maintaining critical skills, core competencies within the group.
    • NOTE: this role has no direct reports and resource management of a team will remain with the engineering supervisor/manage

What will you bring?

Who you are: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of relevant design engineering experience
  • Despite being operations focused, this remains a technical engineering role and will involve aspects of project engineering oversight and therefore a licensed professional engineer in the province of Ontario is required
  • Experience working to nuclear QA program design processes (other specialized QAP with design process governance may also be acceptable)
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools (ANSYS, Inventor, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong teamwork and demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects and perform tasks under pressure
  • Ability to Influence others outside of own job area regarding policies, practices and procedures
  • Demonstrates sound contract knowledge, uses approved commercial processes, manages work to terms, scope; tracks progress and models a questioning attitude
  • Requires strong communication with leadership and general understanding of financial models.

This is a challenging position that will require a solid technical background, both from an analytical and practical perspective.  Strong interpersonal and communication abilities are essential to be successful in our team-based environment.  You must possess strong problem solving skills and apply a creative yet methodical approach.
